PALO ALTO WEEKLY    4 DECEMBER 2015

MIXED NUTS AND MERLOT

. . . I've heard many people say Calave would fit right in in London or New York.  They're right. The 35-seat space exudes a sophisticated, urban feel, headlined by a U-shaped bar with rows of wine glasses hanging above, evoking a chandelier.  Black and white alternate as primary color schemes, giving everything a glamorous, Roaring '20s atmosphere.  I half expected Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable to stroll in.  Seating areas vary from a high communal table to a cozy, low-slung sofa to snug tables with tremendously comfortable "cigar" chairs. Outside seating expands the capacity, which is often needed at happy hour. . .

. . . Calave’s wine list is all over the world.  I’d steer you towards the “European Vacation” flight that visits Barolo, Bordeaux and Rioja, or stay near home and enjoy a glass of the Santa Cruz Mountains-sourced “Lost Weekend” Sangiovese-Merlot blend on tap from Beauregard Vineyards. Yes, there are orange-coriander nuts, cheese, and charcuterie to munch on. But there’s also a whole lot more than just passive grazing snacks, highlighted by an entire PB&J section! . . .

CALIFORNIA AVENUE AMPS IT UP

The historical site at 299 California Ave., previously a hair salon, has been split in half and has reopened with the new Calave wine bar on one side and the salon on the other.  Lori Romero and husband Dave Villarreal teamed up with James and Becky Laden to launch the new wine bar.  It’s the perfect juxtaposition of modern and historic.  They offer local and international wines with great craft beers.  Their food offerings include truffle popcorn, a variety of artisan peanut butter sandwiches, a great charcuterie plate and more!  California Avenue has definitely received an upgrade with Calave!  The friendly staff and atmosphere make this place a must visit when you’re in Palo Alto.

PALO ALTO WEEKLY    29 JUNE 2015

Calave wine bar opens in Palo Alto

...Owner Lori Romero found out about the historical significance of the 299 California Ave. space after she decided to split the hair salon she currently owns at that address in half and open a wine bar. Romero lives in Campbell, but spends much of her time in Palo Alto, where both she and her husband work. She said they often griped about not having a lot of places for people their age (she's in her 40s) to get a nice glass of wine and socialize. (Though they actually came up with the idea for opening their own place while with another couple at The Wine Room on Ramona Street downtown. This couple, James and Becky Laden, along with Romero's husband Dave Villarreal, all partnered to open the wine bar.)...
